A battery of six leyden jars placed in a wooden box. The leyden jar is a device that ‘stores’ static electricity between two electrodes on the inside and outside of a jar. Measurements 49 x 32 x 28 cm. The ‘leidse fles’, a capacitor (or condenser) was invented in leiden (leyden) by the dutch scientist pieter van musschenbroek (1692-1761) in 1746. The leyden jar was used to conduct many early experiments in electricity, and its discovery was of fundamental importance in the study of electricity.
