A valved glass blub with bell in vacuum of the mid 19th century. In this experiment the air pumped out of a jar containing a ringing bell. As the air is removed, the bell’s sound fades until it’s no longer audible. Back in the 17th century, numerous thinkers thought sound traveled through unseen particles from its source to the observer’s ear.
