18th century silver catheter set
Sold
An 18th century silver catheter set in original case, used for dilating urethral strictures and preserved in their original shagreen-shaped box. The set is French, datable to the late 18th century. While catheters themselves are not rare, a set from this period in its curved box is uncommon. Most silver catheters were flexible and were mainly used in women; they tended to come with a stylet, one of which is still present here. The male versions were sometimes called “tunneled and grooved irrigation sounds” and were used to dilate strictures in the male urethra.
Dimensions: 10 x 30 x 4 cm.
