Van der spieghel studied at padua under girolamo fabrizio (1537-1619) and giulio casserio (1552-1616) and graduated arround 1604 till master in medicine. In 1612 he left italy for belgium. He remained there briefly, however, then travelled through germany and finally settled in boheme. Soon afterwards he became medicus primarius of bohemia. On december 22, 1616, the venetian senate appointed spieghel professor of anatomy and surgery. He had been nominated to this position by the venetian patrician, giustiniani, venetian ambassador to the emperor in prague when spieghel was there.
