Trephines are circular saws for removing a disk of bone from the cranium or skull. Down the central shaft is a pin for engaging the instrument in the skull and it is then rotated by a handle. It is made of steel and brass with ebony handle, signed ‘Charriere paris’. This famous instumentmaker was established in 1826 as Instrument maker in Paris.
