Two silver catheters in a shagreen case

Sold

Two silver catheters in a green shagreen case. The catheters are numbered 6 and 12. The outer case is made of shagreen with silver locks, on the inner side red velvet with decorations of thread.

The term “catheter” originates from the Greek word meaning “to let or send down.” Dating back to 3,000 B.C., catheters were employed to alleviate painful urinary retention. In those days, various materials such as straw, rolled-up palm leaves, hollow onion tops, gold, silver, copper, brass, and lead were utilized to fashion catheters with a hollow shape.

In the 11th century, malleable catheters were developed, and over time, silver emerged as the preferred material for catheters due to its flexibility in shaping and perceived antiseptic functions.
